2020 Calgary Stampede Novice Events & Steer Riding

The Calgary Stampede is proud to support the future of rodeo by showcasing young talent in the novice and junior rodeo events. This year we will be offering Novice Saddle Bronc, Novice Bareback and Junior Steer Riding as events during our rodeo performances.

Two Go Rounds (back to back), July 3 – 8 (slack 8:00 am July 4) and Top Three (3) Aggregate scores will advance to the Finals on Thursday, July 9.

Awards

2020 Awards & Prize Money

Champions of each event will receive a 2020 Calgary Stampede Championship Bronze.

  • Novice Bareback & Novice Saddle Bronc Purse: $5,600 each - $500 held out for Finals.
  • Junior Steer Riding Tier I Purse: $3,000 - $500 held out for Finals.
  • Junior Steer Riding Tier II Purse: $2,000 - $500 held out for Finals

Rules:

Novice Events: Bareback Riding & Saddle Bronc Riding Rules

  1. Each Contestant will compete in 2 Go Rounds (back to back), July 3 – 8 (slack 8:00 am July 4) and Top three (3) Aggregate scores will advance to the Finals on Thursday, July 9.
  2. Ties to advance to the Finals will be broken by a draw. 
  3. No scores will be carried forward to the Finals. (Except for tie-breakers as noted below).
  4. If no qualified rides in Finals, Contestant with highest single score from Go Rounds will be declared Champion.  If a tie still exists, Co-Champions will be declared.
  5. Stock will be drawn randomly.
  6. Contestants must hold a current Amateur Rodeo, High School Rodeo or Collegiate Rodeo Card or a Pro permit.
  7. Contestants for the Novice Bareback & Novice Saddle Bronc Riding must be at least 16 years of age on January 1, 2020 and under 21 years of age on December 31, 2019
  8. NBB & NSB Purse - $5,600 each - $500 held out for Finals.

 

Junior Event: Steer Riding Rules

There will be two Tiers of Junior Steer Riding.

Tier I

  1. The more advanced riders (limited to twenty five) will compete in one Go-Round each from July 6 - 9 and Finals - Top six (6) on Friday, July 10.  
  2. Ties to advance to the Finals will be broken by a draw 
  3. Only qualified rides will advance to the finals.  
  4. No scores will be carried forward to the Finals. (Except for tie-breakers as noted below).
  5. If no qualified rides in Finals, Contestant with highest single score from Go Rounds will be declared Champion.  If a tie still exists, Co-Champions will be declared.
  6. Contestants must hold a current Amateur Rodeo, High School Rodeo Card or a Pro permit.
  7. Contestants for the Junior Steer Riding must be a least 12 years of age on January 1, 2020 and under 15 years of age on December 31, 2019.
  8. Purse $3,000 - $500 held out for Finals.
  9. Helmets and protective vests are mandatory.

Tier II

  1. The remaining Steer Riders (limited to twenty-five) will compete on Saturday, July 4, 8:00am with the top six advancing to the Finals in the Saturday, July 4 afternoon rodeo performance.  
  2. Ties to advance to the Finals will be broken by a draw.  
  3. Only qualified rides will advance to the finals.  
  4. No scores will be carried forward to the Finals. (Except for tie-breakers as noted below).
  5. If no qualified rides in Finals, Contestant with highest single score from Go Rounds will be declared Champion.  If a tie still exists, Co-Champions will be declared.
  6. Contestants must hold a current Amateur Rodeo, High School Rodeo Card or a Pro permit.
  7. Contestants for the Junior Steer Riding must be a least 12 years of age on January 1, 2020 and under 15 years of age on December 31, 2019.
  8. Purse $2,000 - $500 held out for Finals
  9. Helmets and protective vests are mandatory.

 

Minimum Requirements

Regardless of age, there is a minimum standard that each contestant (NSB, NBB, JSR) must meet to be eligible to compete in the Stampede Rodeo. Each contestant must have a membership with a rodeo association as noted above and provide proof of three qualified rides in a Canadian Professional Rodeo Association Rodeo or four qualified rides in at a recognized rodeo association.  Each contestant must have their own gear.

Important

  • The Governing Rules of the Novice and Junior Steer Riding events will be the 2020 CPRA Rulebook and the 2020 Ground Rules of the Calgary Stampede.
  • Entries and payouts will be handled by the Calgary Stampede. All payout cheques will be mailed. 
  • All entries will be made available online: Wednesday, May 27 at 8:00am MDT through Thursday, May 28 at 4:00 p.m. MDT (Novice and Junior Steer Riding Only). 
  • All Entries will be reviewed by the Calgary Stampede Rodeo Office and each entry will be notified if they have been accepted to compete in the 2020 Calgary Stampede or if their entry has not been accepted. 
  • Novice Saddle Bronc and Novice Bareback entry fee $60.00, Junior Steer Riding $30.00.
    • All entry fees will be paid by Calgary Stampede.

The Calgary Stampede reserves the right to reorganize the format of each event at the close of entries, depending on, but not limited to factors such as number of entries received, Rodeo Production schedule, etc. All contestants will be notified if their entry has or has not been accepted.
