Class 101
Pot Luck Artistic Forging
Back by popular demand! The “Potluck” Artistic Forging Class provides the audience with a fun filled opportunity to watch their favourite competitors forge an item spontaneously. Teams of competitors will have access to multiple pieces of steel and any tools they wish in order to create a truly unique and interesting article of their own design, limited only by imagination. Competitors may bring pre-made display stands, wires, hooks, boards, etc. and they may also use pre-made moulds and models to aid in the on-the-spot creation of their works of art. All pieces are donated to a silent auction held during the Metal Art Showcase on Saturday, July 10. This event is a lot of fun for everyone and $1000 in prize money is awarded to the winning team as voted on by audience members and attendees of the Metal Art Showcase.
Class 102
Artistic Forging
This class honours the tradition of forged metal work. There is $4000 in prize money available in this class; $1000 goes to the winner of each of the following categories: Peers’ Choice, Collectors’ Choice and Judges’ Choice, plus $1000 for the overall champion (based on combined scores in all three of the above categories). There are no limitations on material or design, but this class does emphasize traditional blacksmithing and forging techniques. The Judges’ Choice prize will be awarded based on a score out of 30 with 10 points available for effective use of material, creativity and quality of forging. Peers’ Choice and Collectors Choice prizes will be awarded based on a ballot voting system. Pieces will be presented for sale by unreserved auction at the 2010 Metal Art Showcase. The artist will receive 60% of the auction proceeds with 40% remaining with the Calgary Stampede in the form of a sales commission. Every effort will be made to showcase the submitted pieces and promote the work of the artist blacksmith through opportunities available at the Calgary Stampede.
Class 103
Artistic Metal Non-Forged
This class celebrates the diversity of metal art. There are no limitations on type of metal used, design or construction technique. There is $500 in prize money available in this class that will be awarded for Collectors’ Choice. The Collectors’ Choice prize will be awarded based on a ballot voting system.
Please see the enclosed entry form and contract for information on how to enter any of the Artistic Forging classes. There is no limit on theme of the artwork, but competitors should note that western themed pieces often garner the most interest from the buyers. Submissions from competitors attending the WCBC may be dropped off in the lobby of the official WCBC hotel on Tuesday, July 6 between 10:00 am and 12 noon.
