See the fabulous Belgian, Clydesdale, Percheron and Shire horses — the gentle giants of the equine world — presented in all their majesty at the Pengrowth Saddledome and the Big Top.
The Heavy Horse Show includes approximately 110 classes, with conformation events held on the mornings of Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4, highlighting the best of each breed.
A handful of these competitions will see these horses in cart and hitch — stepping in time to specially selected music performed by members of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO).
It’s an unforgettable experience, with world-class horses and musicians performing together on July 3 at 7 p.m., July 4 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., and July 5 at 1 p.m. That final musical presentation features the World Champion Six Horse Hitch competition, sanctioned by the North American Six Horse Hitch Classic Series.

Dundee Wealth Heavy Horse show entries must be completed on official entry forms and must be received in the Agriculture Entries Office by specified dates. All horses with the exception of foals and grade horses must be accompanied by registration papers. THE ORIGINAL REGISTRATION PAPER OR A NOTARIAL COPY MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR PEDIGREE CHECKING.

NO ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER JUNE 6 POSTMARKED OR OTHERWISE.

SUBSTITUTION of one animal for another within a class will be allowed up to 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 with no listing in the official show program. The substitution must be submitted in writing to the Agriculture Entries Office.

Regulations:: Original registration papers or original notarial copies must be presented to be eligible to show. See Rule #11
1. Special attention is called to the Calgary Stampede General Rules.
2. Animals shall be presented to show events free of violative drug residues. The act of entering an animal in a livestock show is the giving of consent by the owner, exhibitor, fitter, trainer and/or absolutely responsible person for show management to obtain any specimens of urine, saliva, blood or other substances from the animal to be used in testing. Animals shall not be administered drugs other than in accordance with applicable federal, state and provincial statutes regulation and rules. Livestock shall not be exhibited if the drugs administered in accordance with federal, state and provincial statues, regulations and rules affect the animal's performance or appearance at the event. If the laboratory report on the analysis of saliva, urine, blood, or other samples taken from livestock indicates the presence of forbidden drugs or medication, this shall be prima facie evidence such substance has been administered to the animal either internally or externally. It is presumed that the sample of urine, saliva, blood, or other substance tested by the laboratory to which it is sent is the one taken from the animal in question, its integrity is preserved and all procedures of said collection and preservation, transfer to the laboratory and analysis of the sample are correct and accurate and the report received from the laboratory pertains to the sample taken from the animal in question and correctly reflects the condition of the animal at the time the sample was taken, with the burden on the owner, exhibitor, fitter, trainer, or absolutely responsible person to prove otherwise. At any time after an animal arrives on the fair or livestock show premises, all treatments involving the use of drugs and/or medications for the sole purpose of protecting the health of the animal shall be administered by a licensed veterinarian.
3. Any surgical procedure or injection of any foreign substance or drug or the external application of any substance (irritant, counterirritant, or similar substance) which could affect the animal's performance or alter its natural contour, conformation, appearance, except external applications of substance to the hoofs or horns of animals which affect appearance only and except for surgical procedures performed by a duly licensed veterinarian for the sole purpose of protecting the health of the animal, is prohibited.
4. The use of showing and/or handling practices or devices such as striking animals to cause swelling, using electrical contrivance, or other similar practices are not acceptable and are prohibited.
5. Heavy Horse exhibitors are responsible to carry their own liability insurance (see Liability - General Rules).
6. Please indicate stable requirements on the entry form. Every effort will be made to comply with all reasonable requests. All horses are required to stand in tie stalls with the exception of stallions 2 years of age or older and mares with nursing foals. They will be stalled in box stalls only. Stall fees must be paid in full with the entry.
7. To be eligible to show and receive prize money each breed must be shown separately and have at least three exhibitors per breed represented and no less than twenty animals per breed exhibited as of show day. If insufficient entries are received for any breed, classes will be combined as Female Class, Stallion Class and Gelding Class and will show for ribbons only.
8. If insufficient entries are received for any breed, performance classes may be combined and will show for prize money.
9. Each breeding unit is allowed a maximum of 12 exhibits. There is no restriction on multiple exhibits in any class. "Breeding Unit" is defined as follows: In each classification where the same or common interests are involved in more than one breeding operation, such operations are considered as ONE breeding unit. In all cases where there is any doubt that more than one breeding unit exists, the interpretation shall be that only one breeding unit exists. The responsibility of proof of separation of breeding units shall rest with the exhibitor(s).
10. The age of horses shall date from January 1 of the year in which they are foaled. No stallion, two years of age or older, may be exhibited unless he has two testicles down and showing. Stallions may be examined by an approved veterinarian at the discretion of show management.
11. All exhibits must be owned by and registered as a purebred in the name of the exhibitor or accompanied by a lease registered in the name of the exhibitor. The original registration paper(s) or an original notarized copy must be must be presented during pedigree checks to be eligible to show. Shire yearling and two year old stallions require a Certificate of Notification to comply with these requirements. Note: Copies that are not notarized will not be accepted.
12. No registered female can be shown as a grade mare.
13. Substitution exception is for a brood mare entered whose foal has died after the late entry closing date. Such a mare may be transferred to a mare class.
14. Exhibitors canceling their entries shall forfeit their entry fee, except when a certificate of disability is issued by a qualified veterinarian. The certificate of disability must be received at the Agriculture Entries Office by Monday, July 13, 2009 in order to receive the entry fee refund.
15. Brood Mare - The exhibitor is required to show a mare visibly nursing a current year foal or provide the registration paper for its current year's foal.
16. All foals must be exhibited on the halter. Mares may accompany foals into the ring if desired by the exhibitor.
17. Get of Sire - Three animals, any age, the get of one sire. The registered name and number of the sire must appear on the entry form at the time of entry. Each animal must have been shown in its appropriate single section. At least one animal must be owned by the exhibitor and registered as a purebred in the exhibitor's name. Multiple entries are accepted. Geldings are not eligible.
18. Progeny of Dam - Two animals of any age, the progeny of one dam. The registered name and number of the dam must appear on the entry form at the time of entry. Each animal must have been shown in its appropriate single section. Both animals must be owned by the exhibitor and registered as a purebred in the exhibitor's name. Multiple entries accepted. Geldings are not eligible.
19. Breeders Herd (stallion & three mares) - Each animal must be owned by the exhibitor and registered in the exhibitor's name. Each animal must have been shown in its appropriate single section if offered. Maximum of one entry per exhibitor.
20. No stallion may be shown in any youth class.
21. Judging - Exhibitors must ascertain at what time judging will take place; and no complaint or appeal based upon the statement that the judges have overlooked exhibits will be considered by the Calgary Stampede.
22. Time of Showing - The Heavy Horse schedule will be published in the official show program. Exhibitors are required to act accordingly. Any animals not presented in the ring at the time the class is called will be barred from showing in that class. Barn runners will not be used. There will be no gate holds.
23. It is the tradition of the show ring that an exhibitor be correctly attired for the class in question, that attendants be neatly dressed and horses properly presented. The management may in its discretion bar any entry or person from entering the show ring if not suitably presented to appear before an audience. No Work Clothes will be allowed in the arena.
24. The use of long whips (3 feet or longer) by exhibitors in the show ring during the halter and/or riding classes or in the marshalling/hitching area is prohibited. The ring master may be allowed the use of a long whip.
25. The drivers in the Ladies Cart are permitted to enter in more than one breed. Drivers must be 18 years or older as of show day.
26. Youth Classes - The driver in a youth team class must be accompanied by an adult. The driver in the youth cart class has the option of being accompanied by an adult. Any attendant must be correctly attired for the class in question.
27. The Riding Classes English & Western, are jackpot payout (entry fees paid back on a percentage basis). A $300 purse has been added. The class will be judged 40% conformation, 60% performance. Performance to include, but not limited to: manners, suitability, and apparent ability to give a pleasurable ride. To be shown at a walk, trot/jog, and canter/lope. Horses may be asked to back. The judge may call for extension or collection of any gait. The placings will be left to the discretion of the judge. The suitability of equipment will be left to the discretion of the judge. Western horses are to be ridden stock seat. Rider to be dressed in Western attire. English horses to be ridden basic seat. Rider to be dressed in English attire. The use of whips, tie downs or martingales are strictly prohibited.
28. The costume class is a jackpot payout with $300 added purse and may be shown mounted (riding - with an english saddle, western saddle or bareback pad) or cart. The class will be judged on originality, suitability, attractiveness, and manner presentation 60% and performance 40%. Fancy, traditional or original. Horses may be asked to walk, trot/jog. All costumes must be safe. The committee reserves the right to dismiss or refuse entry to any entry it considers unsafe.
29. The release of any Heavy Horses from the Agriculture Building will begin at 09:00 PM on Monday, July 6, 2009. All Heavy Horses must be out of the Agriculture Building by 10:00am Tuesday, July 7, 2009. All early releases must be pre-arranged with the Heavy Horse Barn Boss. Failure to comply will result in forfeiture of prize money.
30. Any item not covered by the above mentioned rules will be ruled on by the Heavy Horse Committee.
